In a verdict that sends a loud message to sexual violence survivors, R. Kelly was convicted Monday on all counts in his New York sex-trafficking trial.
The singer, whose claim to fame was helping redefine R&B and hip hop, may face decades in prison for violating the Mann Act, an anti-sex trafficking law that makes it illegal to take anyone across state lines “for any immoral purpose.”
Sex trafficking is an offense to the sanctity of human life and shines a light on the sexual perversion in a fallen world—and it’s running rampant in the nations. The International Labour Organization estimated 3.8 million adults and 1 million children were victims of forced sexual exploitation in 2016 around the world.
The vast majority of those victims are women and girls. In fact, one in seven runaways in the U.S. in 2018 is likely a victim of child sex trafficking, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The Root of Sex Trafficking
The love of money is a root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10)—and sex trafficking is big business. Profits from forced sex labor are estimated at $99 billion worldwide, according to the International Labour Organization. Forced sex work commanded the highest profits per victim.
See those “spas” peppering the landscapes of cities? Many of them are perversion parlors. Polaris estimates more than 9,000 illicit spas are operating in America alone in big cities and suburban strip malls alike. And The Urban Institute reports the number is growing. It’s no wonder, given it’s a $2.5 billion business.
Of course, major events like the Super Bowl are sex trafficking hot spots. Wide-scale efforts have been launched to stop abduction of children and women at such events. Despite all this, prosecutions of sex trafficking are down in the U.S.
The End Times Rise of Babylonian Slavery
Despite Kelly’s conviction, though, sex trafficking is likely increase in the end times with the rise of Babylon. Remember, Babylon the Great is the Mother of Harlots and the Abominations of the Earth (see Revelation 17:5). Babylon will eventually fall, but we haven’t even fully seen its rise yet. Babylon will be judged, but not before it ensnares more souls.
The end time rise of Babylon is directly connected with sex trafficking. Revelation 18:11-13 shows this explicitly, “And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise anymore: merchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble; and cinnamon and incense, fragrant oil and frankincense, wine and oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and bodies and souls of men.”
Note the last few words of the verse: and bodies and souls of men. Can you see the connection? Babylon will fall in a day. Babylon will become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird, but not before all the nations have drunk of the wine of wrath of her fornication and the merchants of the earth become rich through the abundance of her luxury (see Revelation 18:2-3).
Come Out From Among Her
Indeed, Babylon is rising and will keep rising until the appointed time. God is warning the Bride of Christ to “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues” (Revelation 18:4). This is a warning to have no part in the works of darkness, to consecrate ourselves to God in a world that is growing ever darker.
Are Christians fueling the rise of Babylon? If so, how?
When we spend our money to support perverse entertainment, including pornography, we are contributing to the rise of Babylon. Proven Men Ministries reveals survey results that show 77 percent Christian men between 18 and 30 years old are looking at porn at least monthly, while 36 percent are viewing pornography on a daily basis and 32 percent admit to being addicted to porn. The numbers among older men and married men are no better.
When we put idolatry over intercession, we’re allowing sex traffickers to succeed in their evil exploits. What idolatry? There’s the idol of self-sufficiency. Remember, in Babylon will be the epicenter of the earth before Christ’s Second Coming (see Revelation 18:7). Then there’s the idol of comfort. Babylon will be wealthy and its inhabitants will live in luxury (see Revelation 18:14-17).
There are many idols. God is calling us to walk in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” We’re entering the end times. We cannot allow the deception all around us to get into our hearts. We must pray without ceasing, knowing that we can’t pray away the end times but we can pray through the end times and come out victorious.
